Get involved, and help shape the future of CHEST! We are currently accepting applications for several leadership positions within our committees, work groups, and task forces, with terms beginning January 1, 2027.

CHEST greatly values the contributions of the entire multiprofessional health care team and fostering diverse perspectives within its leadership. We strongly encourage nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists, physician assistants, and fellows-in-training to apply for open positions.

In alignment with our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, we also welcome applications from individuals of diverse backgrounds who are underrepresented in the field of chest medicine.

CHEST follows a self-nomination process, allowing candidates to apply for up to three positions. All applicants must be CHEST members. Applications are reviewed and voted on by current committee members, with recommended candidates submitted to the CHEST President-Elect for final approval. Applicants will be notified regarding their nomination status in late August/early September.

Each committee or work group is unique in its own way. Committee openings are highly competitive, so please only apply to positions in which you are truly interested.

Reviewing the Details
Carefully review the expectations for the committees in which you are interested. Requirements vary by committee and position. To ensure you meet these requirements in terms of time, experience, and expectations, please read the Eligibility section of each committee.

Statement of Interest
Each committee opening requires a statement of interest (SOI), no more than 500 words. Make sure your SOI is personalized to the role to which you’re applying. It is highly encouraged to not use the same SOI for each position to which you are applying. Highlight your experience as it relates to that group’s roles and responsibilities as listed in each of the committee drop-down menus.

For example, if you are applying to the Scientific Presentations and Awards Committee, note that you have submitted posters/abstracts or have served as a grader; or, if you are interested in applying to the Training and Transitions Committee, note how you directly work with fellows in your institution, whether in serving as a program director or faculty member.

Condensed CV
We ask that you upload a current condensed CV during the application process. Condensed CVs should be between eight to 10 pages.

Letters of Recommendation
If you are applying for a position that requires a letter of recommendation (LOR), please refer to the Eligibility section of the committee description to ensure you obtain appropriate LORs.

Education Committee

Member Openings: 2

The Education Committee (EC) is responsible for providing input and perspectives related to CHEST educational activities. The committee serves as a broader group of education experts to assist and inform the Education Executive Committee on the latest trends, technological advancements, and regulatory requirements in the medical field.

Through the robust educational portfolio, the committee ensures CHEST programs meet the needs of the membership, collaborates to diversify educational offerings, provides innovative delivery platforms, and guides CHEST’s longitudinal educational strategy.

Required Expertise/Knowledge Area

Candidates should demonstrate experience and capability in the following areas:

  • Medical Education and Adult Learning
    • Formal training or practical experience applying learning principles (eg, active learning, case-based teaching, spaced learning)
  • Needs Assessment
    • Experience identifying clinical or practice gaps using data
    • Ability to design a curriculum to address gaps
    • Experience evaluating impact across multiple levels such as knowledge, behavior, clinical outcomes, and/or patient outcomes
  • Program and Curriculum Development
    • Proven ability to design, implement, and refine educational programs
    • Experience developing faculty development initiatives (eg, training educators in teaching methods, feedback, assessment)
  • Health Care Organizational Experience
    • Knowledge in institutional, hospital, or health system education committees (eg, CME committees, graduate medical education committees, simulation programs)
  • Accreditation Knowledge
    • Working knowledge of accreditation standards and expectations, including Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and/or Society for Simulation in Healthcare accreditation criteria
  • Certification and Blueprint Familiarity
    • Understanding of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) subspecialty blueprints
    • Familiarly with ABIM’s Maintenance of Certification requirements
    • Ability to align educational content with certification standards and learner needs

Time Commitment

In order to meet EC goals and project deadlines, members are expected to attend one-hour monthly conference calls and, additionally, conference calls of any subcommittees, work groups, or task forces with which they are individually involved.

Members will serve a two-year term, eligible for one reappointment for a total of four years.

EDUCATION SUBCOMMITTEES

The Education Subcommittees work to provide education deliverables through their own unique subcommittee. Each subcommittee holds monthly conference calls. The Chair of each subcommittee sits on the Education Committee.

Educator Development Subcommittee

Member Opening: 1

The Educator Development Subcommittee is tasked with generating and delivering programs for faculty development in the field of clinical education to CHEST faculty members.

Responsibilities

  • Design and oversee CHEST faculty development programs and curriculum.
  • Promote engagement and participation in educator development initiatives.
  • Recognize educational excellence, including the selection of educator awards (Early Career Clinician Educator, Master Clinician Educator Award).
  • Maintain and advance the Distinguished CHEST Educator designation.
  • Curate Educator Development Track sessions for the CHEST Annual Meeting.
  • Collaborate on initiatives such as 360-degree peer coaching.
  • Enhance interdisciplinary offerings across programs.
  • Develop resources for the CHEST Educator Hub.

Time Commitment

Subcommittee members are expected to attend monthly one-hour conference calls. On average, members can spend between two to five hours a month on subcommittee-related projects/activities, including any ad hoc conference calls. In addition, subcommittee members can expect about five hours of award grading during February/March of each year.

Members will serve a two-year term, eligible for one reappointment for a total of four years.

Outcomes Subcommittee

The Outcomes Subcommittee develops mechanisms in collaboration with course directors/chairs and faculty to assess the impact of educational interventions on confidence, knowledge, and, ultimately, clinical practice and outcomes. Subcommittee members help develop methods to assess educational quality, the quality of item writing, effective learner feedback, and/or curricular design. The subcommittee also helps develop surveys and evaluation tools in order to oversee the evaluation of CHEST programs and faculty. The group reviews the outcomes from recurring activities and disseminates these results to program chairs and faculty.

Responsibilities

  • Customize evaluation tool designs for various CHEST educational offerings (board review, games, live learning, simulation, etc.) to ensure the capture of meaningful outcomes for data-driven decisions.
  • Analyze data to determine the outcome values.
  • Review and recommend improvements to education planning forms and general outcomes reports.
  • Collaborate with faculty members to assist and develop outcome publications on specific topics.
  • Collaborate with other subcommittees on various projects.

Time Commitment

Subcommittee members are expected to attend monthly one-hour conference calls. On average, members can spend between two to five hours a month on subcommittee-related projects/activities, including any ad hoc conference calls.

FCCP Subcommittee

Member Opening: 1

The FCCP Subcommittee maintains and elevates the integrity of the CHEST community through oversight of the Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians (FCCP) application process. The subcommittee reviews all FCCP applications upon the criteria and materials provided.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and adjudicate applications for FCCP.
  • Provide guidance and direction to any rejected applications to support their future success.
  • Work with the Professional Standards Committee on appeals.
  • Provide analysis to the Professional Standards Committee and membership and marketing staff on trends gleaned through applications, including common challenges.
  • Serve as an ambassador and champion to new members and FCCPs by conducting personal outreach on a cadence defined by staff.
  • Attend the annual convocation ceremony, and network with new fellows.

Time Commitment

Individuals must be available to review all FCCP applications within one week of receipt and reach out to designated members monthly. Individuals may also attend ad hoc conference calls.

Additional Eligibility Requirement
Candidates who are interested in applying should be current FCCPs as of nomination submission.

Guidelines Oversight Committee

The Guidelines Oversight Committee (GOC) aims to optimize clinical care by overseeing the development of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. The GOC ensures CHEST guidelines meet the ongoing and emerging needs of CHEST membership and their patients and provide a foundation for initiatives across the organization.

The GOC is comprised of members in the following content areas: asthma, chest infections, COPD, clinical practice, critical care, diffuse lung disease, pulmonary vascular disease, sleep, and thoracic oncology.

Although selection is not restricted to these domains, this year, the GOC will place emphasis on members with expertise in interstitial lung disease, thoracic oncology, and pulmonary vascular disease. Expertise in these areas will ensure that the GOC is aware of emerging literature in these areas that can help shape the guideline portfolio.

Responsibilities

The GOC makes recommendations to the CHEST Board of Regents on issues related to health, science, and clinical policy in areas of cardiopulmonary medicine and surgery, critical care, sleep medicine, and related disciplines.

Applicants should have familiarity with CHEST’s evidence-based guidelines and their development (using GRADE methodology), such as serving on a CHEST guideline panel or having demonstrated experience in the development of systematic reviews or evidence-based recommendations.

Prior participation in coursework in areas of evidence-based medicine (eg, CHEST Guideline Methodology courses, Cochrane courses, GRADE workshops) is also valuable but not necessary. Awareness of the various stakeholders related to clinical practice guidelines—such as the National Academy of Medicine, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s National Guideline Clearinghouse, Guidelines International Network, and similar entities—is also valuable not but necessary.

Member responsibilities include:

  • Leverage knowledge of organizational priorities and the clinical landscape to support the annual call for topics and selection of new guidelines.
  • Serve as liaisons to guideline chairs and support to staff methodologists, helping to identify and work through barriers to timeline adherence.
  • Communicate key information affecting volunteers, including topic selection or rejection, panel nomination outcomes, and declaration of relationships.
  • Ensure diverse and necessary perspectives are included in guidelines through review and selection of chair-nominated and self-nominated guideline panelists.
  • Facilitate organizational reviews of CHEST guideline manuscripts.
  • Support postpublication guideline dissemination activities.
  • Leverage knowledge of organizational priorities, the clinical landscape, and current CHEST guidelines to inform topic selection of other CHEST documents.
  • Nominate or serve as a CHEST representative to serve as a guideline panelist on outside society guidelines being considered for CHEST endorsement.
  • Nominate or serve as a reviewer of outside society guidelines being considered for CHEST endorsement.
  • Serve as a domain liaison to a guideline panel.

Domain liaison responsibilities include:

  • Monitor conflict of interest policy adherence of guideline panelists.
  • Attend guideline panel meetings.
  • Participate, as desired, in panel deliberations/guideline development.
  • Liaise with the GOC on problems and barriers to timely progress.

Additional Eligibility Criteria

Guideline expertise is preferred in a necessary content area as demonstrated by publication history, active research, project work, thought leadership, clinical experience, and/or a strong network among the community.

Time Commitment

Members will serve a two-year term, eligible for one reappointment for a total of four years.

Committee members should expect the following time commitments within a given calendar year.

Participation in the following meetings:

  • Monthly one-hour conference calls – 12 hours
  • In-person Guideline Request for Proposal Meeting – 1.5 days
  • Domain liaison participation (time varies per guideline)

LGBTQ+ at CHEST Interest Group Steering Committee

The LGBTQ+ at CHEST Interest Group provides a space where CHEST members can exchange resources, seek support, provide mentorship, gain knowledge, and share perspectives that are related to LGBTQ+ identity. Self-identification as a member of the LGBTQ+ community is not a prerequisite for membership, as this group is open to any CHEST member who is committed to advancing gender-affirming approaches to health, wellness, and education.

Responsibilities

  • Identify annual goals, and report out on progress to the larger Interest Group.
  • Actively participate in event planning, including programming and opportunities at the annual meeting.
  • Provide relevant insights, guidance, and best practices pertaining to LGBTQ+ issues within chest medicine, as needed.
  • Maintain open and consistent lines of communication for Interest Group members to express concerns, needs, or opportunities to the Steering Committee.

Time Commitment

Steering Committee members must be available to attend bimonthly one-hour conference calls and attend the Cultures and Communities Reception at the CHEST Annual Meeting. Between meetings, Steering Committee members develop blog posts for the website and are intermittently asked to complete tasks pertaining to Steering Committee goals and events.

Fellow-in-Training/Medical Student/Resident/Early Career positions will serve a two-year term. Members will serve a two-year term, eligible for two reappointments for a total of six years. The Vice-Chair will serve one two-year term, followed by one two-year term as Chair and one two-year term as Ex-Officio.

LIVE LEARNING DOMAIN TASK FORCES

NOTE: Application by invite only. Applicants must have at least two years of regular participation as CHEST faculty in live learning courses. Those who do not meet this requirement will not be considered.

The Live Learning Domain Task Forces oversee the planning, execution, and evaluation of CHEST Live Learning courses throughout the year and simulation activities during the CHEST Annual Meeting.

Responsibilities

Each domain task force will:

  • Oversee the planning and development of content for simulation courses and activities across defined procedural areas.
  • Ensure all planning policies and procedures are followed, including but not limited to faculty conflict of interest review, completion of instructional design documentation, equipment identification and station planning, content review, evaluation strategy definition, and faculty debrief.
  • Participate in activity planning calls and meetings, as needed.
  • Orient new program faculty to the objectives, methodologies, and formats utilized in the activity; conduct live precourse faculty development prior to each activity.
  • Provide on-site leadership support to assigned live activities.
  • Serve as course faculty and chairs when appropriate.
  • Ensure fair rotation of individual faculty and responsibilities for specific programs.
  • Integrate and update program changes based on collaboration with the Outcomes Subcommittee and other agreed-upon feedback mechanisms.
  • Support the development and execution of identified procedural training opportunities internationally and with third-party partners, as needed.

Time Commitment

Domain task force members can expect to attend monthly one-hour conference calls, plus additional work to support simulation courses (two to five hours per month).

Members will serve a two-year term, eligible for one reappointment for a total of four years. The Vice-Chair will serve one two-year term, followed by one two-year term as Chair and one two-year term as Ex-Officio.

Additional Eligibility Requirements

All members of each domain task force should have the following background:

  • At least two years of regular participation as CHEST faculty in live learning courses is REQUIRED. Those who do not meet this requirement will not be considered.
  • Formal training or experience in and commitment to medical education and adult learning principles.
  • Ability to identify and disseminate best practices and innovations for incorporating simulation modalities.
  • Understanding of Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and Society for Simulation in Healthcare accreditation criteria.

Airways Management

  • Possess clinical expertise and reputation to be well-versed in airway management, direct laryngoscopy, indirect laryngoscopy, and rescue techniques.
  • Must have at least two years of regular participation as CHEST faculty in airways management live learning courses. Those who do not meet this requirement will not be considered.

Critical Skills for Critical Care

Mechanical Ventilation

Pulmonary Physiology, Function, and Testing

Ultrasonography

Professional Standards Committee

The Professional Standards Committee (PSC) ensures the highest standards are met relating to relationship disclosures and professional behavior in a leading professional society. The PSC assesses and makes determinations based on the applicable conflict of interest (COI) policies on routine matters related to leadership, guidelines, and education. All members of the PSC are defined as Level I leaders in the CHEST Leadership COI Policy.

Responsibilities

  • Review COI disclosures referred to the PSC, and make recommendations based on application of the applicable COI policy.
  • Review COI-related questions from volunteer leaders, faculty, and guideline panels.
  • Review applications for waivers from Level I leaders, and make recommendations to the COI Review Committee on next steps determined from review.
  • The PSC is also responsible for FCCP Subcommittee oversight.

Time Commitment

Individuals must be available to attend monthly one-hour conference calls and can expect to spend two to three hours a month reviewing guideline panelist and leadership disclosure forms and inquiries.

Members will serve a two-year term, eligible for one reappointment for a total of four years. The Vice-Chair will serve one two-year term, followed by one two-year term as Chair and one two-year term as Immediate Past Chair.

Additional Eligibility Requirement

Candidates who are interested in applying should have previous volunteer experience on a high-level committee and/or the Board of Regents/Board of Advisors. Applicants must be an FCCP, be familiar with the CHEST Leadership COI Policy and Guidelines Relationship Policy, and have an interest and understanding of COI over the last three years.

Respiratory Care Interest Group Steering Committee

The Respiratory Care Steering Committee provides a space where members can exchange resources, seek support, provide mentorship, gain knowledge, and share perspectives that broadly relate to respiratory care from a variety of perspectives.

Steering Committee members are dedicated to excellence in the field and practice of respiratory care and work collaboratively to offer expert guidance and insights on key issues that impact patients, communities, and clinicians.

Responsibilities

  • Identify annual goals, and report out on progress to the larger Interest Group.
  • Actively participate in event planning, including virtual programming and opportunities at the annual meeting.
  • Provide relevant insights, guidance, and best practices pertaining to respiratory care issues within chest medicine, as needed.
  • Maintain open and consistent lines of communication for Interest Group members to express concerns, needs, or opportunities to the Steering Committee.

Time commitment

Steering Committee members must be available to attend bimonthly one-hour conference calls, the Respiratory Care Luncheon at the CHEST Annual Meeting, and the Cultures and Communities Reception at the CHEST Annual Meeting. Between meetings, Steering Committee members are intermittently asked to complete tasks pertaining to Steering Committee goals and events.

Fellow-in-Training/Medical Student/Resident/Early Career positions will serve a two-year term. Members will serve a two-year term, eligible for two reappointments for a total of six years. The Vice-Chair will serve one two-year term, followed by one two-year term as Chair and one two-year term as Ex-Officio.

Scientific Presentations and Awards Committee

The Scientific Presentations and Awards Committee evaluates and selects scientific abstracts for oral, rapid-fire, and poster sessions at the CHEST Annual Meeting, aligned with the meeting's education curriculum. Candidates must be members of CHEST who have completed training and are prepared to assist in the educational development of the scientific abstract sessions at the CHEST Annual Meeting.

Responsibilities

  • Grade abstract submissions (online).
  • Organize and build abstract sessions for the CHEST Annual Meeting (online).
  • Attend an in-person session review meeting at CHEST Headquarters, which will take place in mid-/late-April or early May. This meeting requires a commitment of two days.
  • Serve as a moderator, and recruit additional moderators for the abstract sessions at CHEST.
  • Select finalists for abstract awards at CHEST.

Time commitment

Members will serve a two-year term, eligible for one reappointment for a total of four years.

The following outlines the average yearly commitment of all committee members.

  • February: One hour – Virtual welcome call
  • March: Two to four hours – Online grading
  • April: Four to six hours – Online session building (Materials, including a video tutorial, written instructions, and Excel documents, will be emailed to you. The deadline for completion is three to four weeks from the assignment date.)
  • April/May: Two days – Session review meeting at CHEST Headquarters
  • June: One hour – Virtual meeting to discuss award nominees
  • August: One hour – Virtual meeting to discuss late-breaking abstracts
  • October: Serve as a moderator at the CHEST Annual Meeting
  • October/November: One hour – CHEST Annual Meeting debrief virtual call

Training and Transitions Committee

The Training and Transitions Committee (T&T) seeks to engage trainee and early career physicians in CHEST initiatives and activities. T&T works to ensure that the needs of these members are met through education and networking opportunities, including fellows’ courses, CHEST Challenge, case reports, and content at the CHEST Annual Meeting.

Committee members are required to grade session and case report submissions, will be asked to moderate sessions at the CHEST Annual Meeting, and should contribute to content directed to trainees and young professionals.

Candidates must be members of CHEST and should represent one of the following groups:

  • Current training program director, assistant training program director, or training program core faculty representing the areas of pulmonary, critical care, or sleep medicine.
  • CHEST member with an interest in trainee education and leadership.

Time Commitment

Committee members must be available to attend monthly one-hour conference calls, as well as two in-person meetings, the Spring Leadership Meeting, and the CHEST Annual Meeting. Members may lead various virtual and in-person projects, such as fellows' courses, CHEST Challenge, etc, which may require additional calls with each project subcommittee. Committee members may be asked to moderate sessions at the CHEST Annual Meeting and contribute to social media content directed to trainees and young professionals.

Members will serve a two-year term, eligible for one reappointment for a total of four years. The Vice-Chair will serve one two-year term, followed by one two-year term as Chair and one two-year term as Ex-Officio.

Trainee Work Group

Member Openings: 4

The Trainee Work Group reports to the Training and Transitions Committee. The work group is charged with enhancing the development of trainees by providing them with an opportunity to become future CHEST leaders and by fostering their involvement in CHEST activities.

Members of the work group will have the opportunity to develop trainee-related content for the Trainee Lounge at the CHEST Annual Meeting, the online Trainee Hub, and social media platforms. Additional opportunities for content development and serving as a moderator/faculty are available.

Time Commitment

Work group members must be available to attend monthly conference calls (quarterly at least) and the in-person joint meeting with the Training and Transitions Committee at the CHEST Annual Meeting. Applicants should be willing to spend about five to 15 hours each quarter participating in work group activities.

Additional Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must be a trainee member currently in their first or second year of training at the time of their application and able to serve a two-year term on the work group.
  • Applicants must submit a written letter of support from their program director. Women in Medicine Interest Group Steering Committee

The Women in Chest Medicine (WiCM) Interest Group provides a space where CHEST members can exchange resources, seek support, provide mentorship, gain knowledge, and share perspectives that broadly relate to the experiences of women in the chest medicine community (health care providers, patients, caregivers, and community members).

Responsibilities

  • Identify annual WiCM goals, and report out on progress to the larger Interest Group.
  • Actively participate in event planning, including webinars, the WiCM Luncheon at the annual meeting, and other events, as needed.
  • Promote WiCM events as well as engage in the recruitment of new Interest Group members.
  • Provide relevant insights, guidance, and best practices pertaining to women’s health issues within chest medicine, as needed.
  • Maintain open and consistent lines of communication for Interest Group members to express concerns, needs, or opportunities to the Steering Committee.

Time Commitment

Steering Committee members must be available to attend bimonthly one-hour conference calls, attend the WiCM Luncheon at the CHEST Annual Meeting, and attend the Cultures and Communities Reception at the CHEST Annual Meeting. Between meetings, Steering Committee members are intermittently asked to complete tasks pertaining to Steering Committee goals and events.

Fellow-in-Training/Medical Student/Resident/Early Career positions will serve a two-year term. Members will serve a two-year term, eligible for two reappointments for a total of six years. The Vice-Chair will serve one two-year term, followed by one two-year term as Chair and one two-year term as Ex-Officio.

NETWORK/SECTION STEERING COMMITTEES

Networks are special interest groups that focus on specific areas of chest medicine. Through forums for leadership, education, and advocacy, Networks emphasize the clinical and practice issues that clinicians face today. Network leadership positions are held at the Network and Section level. CHEST members, including fellows-in-training and nonphysician clinicians, are encouraged to apply to leadership positions.

Time Commitment

Individuals must be available to attend quarterly one-hour conference calls and their respective in-person Network Open Forum Session at the CHEST Annual Meeting. Members should be willing to spend about five to 10 hours each quarter participating in Network activities as defined in the position descriptions.

The Network Member-at-Large position is intended for mid-career to advanced career applicants who can provide mentorship and serve as liaisons between Network leadership and each Section within the Network.

Fellow-in-Training positions can serve up to a two-year term. Members can serve a two-year term, eligible for one reappointment for a total of four years. The Vice-Chair will serve one two-year term, followed by one two-year term as Chair and one two-year term as Ex-Officio.
