Where do you work?
I work at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor.
What are your research interests and how does this apply to your position within the Networks?
My research interests include lung cancer diagnostics and the development of safe endoscopic technologies for nonresectable pulmonary malignant lesions and severe COPD. I am very intrigued in malignant pleural disease as well. So much to do!
How did you become interested and involved in the Thoracic Oncology and Chest Procedures Network?
I started attending CHEST Annual Meetings in 2012 as a pulmonary and critical care medicine fellow and have gone to the lectures organized by the Network ever since. I was inspired by the talks from Drs. Najib Rahman, Richard Light, David Feller-Kopman, and others. The venues were so small, and the lecturers so approachable and friendly. I learned you can make a big difference by getting involved more actively and helping aid projects on what we as clinicians need to know and want to learn.
Are you involved in any other activities or volunteer positions at CHEST?
Yes, I write CME credit questions for the thoracic oncology section of the journal CHEST®. I also am a member of the Membership Committee at CHEST, and I am a CHEST representative in the American College of Radiology Appropriateness Criteria Committee: Tracheobronchial Disease.
What clinical research is most interesting to you right now?
I am very excited for what’s coming, including increasing yield of bronchoscopic lung nodule biopsies using new platforms and endoscopic ablation in conjunction with cone beam CT.
What are your hobbies?
I play my saxophone(s) every day. I am more of a tenor guy but recently discovered the beauty of the baritone. I have six saxophones. I play duets with my wife (who plays the cello) and daughter (piano). My son just turned 4 years old and hopefully will pick something fun.
What is something you cannot live without (after family and friends)?
Music
Is there anything else you’d like to share with your Network peers?
Yes! That it is super important to get involved. We have a great, supportive team at CHEST, and we are super friendly and very pumped to hear new ideas of how we can make our meetings more valuable and accessible to all.
