Open Access Journals, CHEST Critical Care and CHEST Pulmonary, Are Now Accepting Inaugural Submissions

Two new open access journals within the journal CHEST^® portfolio, CHEST^® Critical Care and CHEST^® Pulmonary, are inviting researchers to submit their work for consideration as the publications prepare to release their first articles later this year.

With a focus on providing more avenues for authors to publish their work, the new titles will feature peer-reviewed, specialized content that advances the care of patients served by critical care and pulmonary medicine clinicians.

“There’s a lot of content sent to the journal CHEST that there just isn’t enough space for, and so I’m hoping one of the main things we can do is provide an outlet for people to have [their] high-quality content published,” said CHEST Critical Care Editor in Chief, Hayley Gershengorn, MD.

Through the open access model, CHEST Critical Care and CHEST Pulmonary will provide opportunities for researchers whose work is funded by groups with an open access mandate to publish under the journal CHEST umbrella. The content will be permanently available to all readers at no cost—without a subscription required.

“The open access format will allow the diversity of our whole community to interact with the journal right from day one of publication,” said CHEST Pulmonary Editor in Chief, Matthew Miles, MD, MEd, FCCP. “It will be our privilege and challenge to…understand the way that the information is received by populations around the world, both those in very high-resource settings and those in low-resource settings.”

These two titles will publish a wide breadth of work including original research, review articles, case reports, commentaries, and other article types.

CHEST Critical Care will feature content on areas of interest like mechanical ventilation, disaster medicine, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, post-ICU care, and more. CHEST Pulmonary will accept submissions covering topics including asthma, chest infections, diffuse lung disease, pulmonary vascular disease, sleep medicine, and many others.

Speaking to first-time submitters who have never published their work before, journal CHEST Editor in Chief, Peter J. Mazzone, MD, MPH, FCCP, offered a few words of guidance on developing and sending research for consideration to the new journals.

“Be [a] clear thinker—what’s your research question? [Investigate] if other research has already answered that question so you don’t waste your own time and resources,” he said. “Seek out help and guidance from those who have been there. Then submit, [and] don’t be deterred or disappointed if you don’t get in the first time. Learn from that process, and eventually you’ll see more and more success.”

In addition to opening their call for manuscript submissions, the journals are also forming the editorial boards that will work alongside Dr. Gershengorn and Dr. Miles.

“It is very important to me that the editorial board is a diverse group across many dimensions like content area expertise, methodologic expertise, clinical background, geographic area, gender, and race and ethnicity,” Dr. Gershengorn said. “What I want for our senior editorial team is that together we represent many aspects of critical care.”
