Through strategic initiatives and a strengthened commitment to advocacy and diversity, the American College of Chest Physicians had a strong impact in 2022. Through expanding the flagship journal CHEST^® into a portfolio of journals and continuing to produce highly cited and reliable expert guidelines, the growth of the organization continues to compound.

Improving patient care

First 5 Minutes^®

CHEST is fully committed to increasing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging both within our organization and throughout medicine.

This process began with a 2020 initiative called the Listening Tour, during which the CHEST Foundation hosted a platform for patients across the United States to share their experiences in health care and what needs to change.

Patients shared harrowing stories of how they lack access to needed health care—due to limited transportation, unreliable internet, or the prohibitive cost of select medications. It was evident from the Listening Tour that there is a palpable lack of equity and trust within medicine for patients from historically marginalized societies.

To help build this missing trust, CHEST launched the First 5 Minutes program, which teaches clinicians empathetic listening. There was an in-person pilot program hosted in June in San Antonio, and the program that will be expanded nationwide through Humana in 2023.

Bridging Specialties™: Timely Diagnosis for ILD

Also focusing on improved care and quality of life, together with Three Lakes Foundation, CHEST launched Bridging Specialties: Timely Diagnosis for ILD.

Aimed at shortening the time to diagnosis for complex lung diseases like pulmonary fibrosis, this initiative brings together pulmonologists and primary care physicians to define a clearer clinician-guided approach to diagnosis for interstitial lung diseases.

Experts from both specialty areas joined to create tangible, functional resources that can streamline the approach to diagnosing complex lung diseases. The clinician toolkit includes a sound bite of what crackles sound like in the lungs, a patient questionnaire, a decision-making tool, and more.

By bridging the specialties and bringing together pulmonary and primary care, CHEST aims to make a real impact on shortening the time to diagnosis for ILDs.

Amplifying voices

In recent years, CHEST reaffirmed its commitment to acting as an advocacy source for members to inform and shape policy decisions, legislature, and more. In 2022, CHEST joined the conversations around hot social topics through producing expert-backed research and analysis and by supporting messages put forth by other organization, including:

When the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) brought on a new Director of FDA's Center for Tobacco Products, CHEST shared organizational and member priorities and connected for a recorded conversation.

The all-digital CHEST Advocates newsletter will offer readers the information and insights they need to champion better care.

Delivered quarterly, each online issue of CHEST Advocates will feature information in these areas and many others:

In 2022, CHEST expanded its scholarly publishing offerings by creating a portfolio of journals, including the journal CHEST and open access journals CHEST^® Critical Care and CHEST^® Pulmonary.

Each month, the journal offers an array of complementary web and multimedia activities to expand the reach of the most interesting, timely, and relevant research. These include animations, journal clubs, podcasts, and visual abstracts.

The open access publishing model is integral to open science, which promotes transparency, inclusiveness, and collaboration in research. Defining and standardizing best care practices

The multidisciplinary guidelines produced by CHEST help translate quality evidence into applicable recommendations that enrich patient care and improve health outcomes. Clinicians around the world turn to CHEST clinical practice guidelines for the most relevant interventions in chest medicine.

In 2022, a new open process for guideline topic submissions was implemented. Anyone in the chest medicine community with an idea for a clinical practice guideline was encouraged to submit an idea directly through the CHEST Guidelines website.

LOOKING AHEAD

In 2023, the Guidelines Oversight Committee is anticipating up to 12 new guidelines in the domains of airway disorders, clinical pulmonology, critical care, interventional pulmonology, pulmonary vascular disease, thoracic oncology, and sleep medicine.

Increasing diversity and belonging

CHEST is committed to creating an inclusive environment where the diverse experiences and perspectives of all members of the CHEST community are amplified, affirmed, and valued. To bolster this commitment, in 2022, the Board of Regents set out to focus more intentionally on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB).

In 2022, CHEST onboarded a Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging and established a Value Setting Work Group to guide the development of organizational values.

The journal CHEST implemented a double-blind peer review process with the goal of reducing bias during manuscript review. The journal also hosted its first implicit bias training to a select group of individuals involved with the publication.

Continuing the progress toward a more inclusive and equitable future, in 2023, CHEST plans to:

create and implement DEIB advisory groups for leadership and staff;
relaunch the Women in Chest Medicine interest group, with a strong focus on professional development, women’s health disparities, and well-being and balance;
provide staff learning opportunities for personal and professional development; and
continue to establish partnerships with community organizations.
