Glenview, IL – Effective January 1, Jack D. Buckley, MD,
MPH, FCCP, is the new President of the American College of Chest Physicians®
(CHEST). John Howington, MD, MBA, FCCP, steps into the role of
President-Elect, Neil S. Freedman, MD, FCCP, is the new President-Designate, and Doreen Addrizzo-Harris, MD, FCCP, completes her term as President to
become Immediate Past President of CHEST.
Jack D. Buckley, MD, MPH, FCCP, is a pulmonologist and
critical care physician with an extensive background in education. Dr.
Buckley is a Professor of Medical Education at Western Michigan University
Homer Stryker MD School of Medicine. Previously, he has served as a
pulmonary and critical care medicine (PCCM) program director at both Henry
Ford Hospital and Indiana University, and he also held leadership positions
in clinical care at Indiana University Health and as Division Head of PCCM
at Henry Ford.
Dr. Buckley received his undergraduate degree from Kalamazoo College and
medical degree from Wayne State University. His residency in internal
medicine and fellowships in pulmonary and critical care and health services
research were completed at Indiana University. He additionally earned a
Master of Public Health degree, also from Indiana University.
Dr. Buckley has been an active and engaged member of CHEST since 1997. He
has served in leadership roles across many domains of the organization,
including CHEST 2020 Congress Italy, Scientific Program Committee (Chair,
2013), Board of Regents, Compensation Committee, Governance Committee,
Training and Transitions Committee (Chair, 2011-2012), Bylaws Committee
(Chair, 2010-2012), Honor Lecture and Awards Committee and Pulmonary
Medicine Board Review (Chair, 2022-2023). He currently serves on the CHEST
SEEK™ Pulmonary Medicine Editorial Board.
For Dr. Buckley’s dedication to advancing PCCM education and faculty
development, he received the CHEST Master Clinician Educator Award in 2016
and has been an annual Distinguished CHEST Educator recipient since the
award’s inception in 2017. He was also the recipient of the Presidential
Honor Lecture at CHEST 2022.
CHEST President-Elect, John Howington, MD, MBA, FCCP, is a
practicing thoracic surgeon currently at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health,
St. Michael Medical Center, in Silverdale, Washington.
Dr. Howington began his CHEST leadership journey with the Networks, as
member of the Interventional Chest Medicine Steering Committee and then as
Thoracic Oncology Network Chair (2008-2010). Other leadership positions
include serving as the President of the CHEST Foundation (2014-2016), member
of the Scientific Program Committee and the Membership Committee and, most
recently, as the Chair of the Finance Committee (2018-2021). Since 2017, he
has served on the Board of Regents as Member-at-Large. Dr. Howington will
serve as the 87th CHEST President in 2025.
CHEST President-Designate Neil S. Freedman, MD, FCCP, is a pulmonary, critical care and sleep physician with a
background in clinical care, health care leadership, quality, financial
oversight, education and advocacy. He currently serves in a senior
leadership role at Endeavor Health as the President of NorthShore Medical
Group, leading a multispecialty practice of 1,100 primary care and specialty
physicians throughout the Chicagoland region. He also is a Clinical
Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of
Medicine.
Dr. Freedman has had the honor of participating as faculty or Chair for more
than 300 presentations at national and international meetings on the topics
of sleep medicine, pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine and the
business of medicine, and he has been recognized for his educational efforts
with the Distinguished CHEST Educator designation from 2017 to 2023. He has
been extremely active within the leadership of CHEST and has held CHEST
leadership positions across the organization since 2006, most notably
including the following: member of the Education Committee, Chair of the
Sleep Medicine Network, Chair of the CHEST Annual Meeting 2016, member of
the CHEST Foundation Board of Trustees, Deputy Editor of CHEST SEEK™ Sleep
Medicine (2014), member of the Joint Finance Oversight Committee
(2008-2017), member and Chair of the Sleep Medicine Board Review Course
(2009-2016) and Chair of the Health Policy and Advocacy Committee
(2020-2021). He has served as Member-at-Large of the Board of Regents over
the past 5 years and currently serves as the Chair of the Oxygen Access and
Education Work Group, Chair of the Finance Committee and member of the
Compensation Committee.
CHEST Immediate Past President, Doreen J. Addrizzo-Harris, MD, FCCP,
is a pulmonary/critical care physician with an extensive background in
bronchiectasis and nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infection and medical
education. Dr. Addrizzo-Harris is currently a Professor of Medicine at the
NYU Grossman School of Medicine. She serves as the Associate Division
Director for Clinical and Faculty Affairs and is the Co-Director of the
NYULH Bronchiectasis and NTM Clinical and Translational Program. She is also
serving in her 23rd year as the Program Director of NYU’s Pulmonary and
Critical Care Medicine Fellowship.
Dr. Addrizzo-Harris received her medical degree and completed her residency
and fellowship training at New York University School of Medicine. Since
completing her training, she was recruited to stay as a faculty member at
NYU, where she has been a critical presence over the past 27 years.
During her leadership tenure with CHEST, Dr. Addrizzo-Harris has served on
the Marketing Committee, Health and Science Policy Committee (Chair,
2007-2009), Government Relations Committee, Scientific Program Committee,
Education Committee, Governance Committee, Editorial Board for the
CHEST Physician®
publication, Professional Standards Committee (Chair, 2016-2018), Board of
Regents and CHEST Foundation Board of Trustees. Most recently, Dr.
Addrizzo-Harris served as the President of the CHEST Foundation from 2018 to
2019 and Co-Chair of the Foundation Awards Committee from 2015 to 2020. Dr.
Addrizzo-Harris was the sixth woman to lead CHEST as the 85th President.
