Highlights from the journal CHEST^®, August 2023

Glenview, Illinois – Published monthly, the journal CHEST^® features peer-reviewed, cutting-edge original research in chest medicine: Pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine and related disciplines. The August issue of the CHEST journal contains 47 articles, including clinically relevant research, reviews, case series, commentary and more. • Critical Care
  A retrospective cohort study, “A Large-Scale Multicenter Retrospective Study on Nephrotoxicity Associated With Empiric Broad-Spectrum Antibiotics in Critically Ill Patients,” suggests that clinicians should consider vancomycin and meropenem or vancomycin and cefepime to reduce the risk of nephrotoxicity for patients in the ICU. • Diffuse Lung Disease
  Original research, “Disparities in Antifibrotic Medication Utilization Among Veterans With Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis,” shows that, among 14,792 veterans with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, 17% received antifibrotics, and there were significant disparities in adoption associated with sex, race, and residence. • Pulmonary Vascular
  In a retrospective observational study, “Prognostic Value of Respiratory Variation in Right Atrial Pressure in Patients With Precapillary Pulmonary Hypertension,” lack of respiratory variation in right atrial pressure was associated with lower cardiac index. • Sleep
  A large cohort study, “Polysomnographic Assessment of Sleep Disturbances in Cancer Development,” confirms the importance of polysomnographic phenotypes and highlights the role that periodic limb movements of sleep and oxygenation desaturation may play in cancer.
