GET TO KNOW YOUR LEADERSHIP

Q&A With Shahid Sheikh, MD, FCCP

Shahid Sheikh, MD, FCCP

Airways Disorders Network Vice-Chair
CHEST member since 1996

September, 2024

Where do you work?
Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

What are your research interests?
My research interest is primarily clinical research with particular interests in asthma and cystic fibrosis.

What led you to join your Network?
My journey with CHEST started in 1996 with my first presentation, and, since then, I am off and on involved in many activities within the organization. In 2016, I joined the Pediatric Chest Medicine NetWork and then was elected as its Chair. I consider CHEST as my home, and, currently, I am serving as Vice-Chair for the Airways Disorders Network. It gives me opportunities to mentor and guide junior faculty and, at the same time, learn from colleagues, improve my skills, and pursue my passions.

What achievements are you most proud of contributing to within your Network?
In my humble opinion, the primary function of any Section or Network is to unite individuals from different geographical locations and institutions with different backgrounds and change them into a team that learns from each other's experiences and develops cohesiveness to fulfill their goals and support others in their careers. This includes developing grant proposals, coordinating multicenter research groups, and improving clinical excellence. My goal is to provide such leadership and mentorship within my Network for everyone to achieve these goals, and I am proud of contributing to the achievement of these goals within my Network.

How has being in a Network benefited your career and your experience as a CHEST member?
For me, being part of CHEST and its Networks has been a very humbling experience. I have been involved in educational content creation, annual meeting organization, grant reviews, and more. Most importantly, CHEST has helped me in my passion of mentoring young faculty and fellows and has provided new opportunities for collaborations and to make new friends. It also helped me to learn from others and improve my networking and personal growth.

What are your hobbies?
My hobbies include reading, traveling, playing cricket, and spending quality time with my family.

What is something you cannot live without (after family and friends)?
Music, cricket, mangoes, and biryani.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with your Network peers?
I urge you to get involved in CHEST, including its Networks and committees. CHEST has helped me find new friends and provided me new opportunities. CHEST is a very relaxed and welcoming organization with dedicated leadership. It is a clinically oriented organization dedicated to improving patient care and creating a positive environment for networking and personal growth.
