GET TO KNOW YOUR LEADERSHIP
Q&A With Katie Pendleton, MD, FCCP
Sepsis/Shock Section Chair
CHEST member since 2017
February 19, 2024
Where do you work?
University of Minnesota.
What are your research interests?
Sepsis, ICU sedation, medical education, and all things related to quality improvement in critical care.
What led you to join your Network?
I remember attending my first CHEST conference as a medicine resident and thinking what a friendly and welcoming environment it was at CHEST. I was encouraged by my mentors to apply for a Network position in 2018 to get more involved, and I have never looked back!
What achievements are you most proud of contributing to within your Network?
Last year, as Vice-Chair of the Sepsis/Shock Section, I was invited to participate as a member of the CHEST Sepsis Resources Steering Committee. To be completely honest, I was starstruck by the other members of the committee. Everyone was amazing and so fun to work with, and we created some great educational content related to sepsis!
How has being in a Network benefited your career and your experience as a CHEST member?
I cannot say enough about the amazing opportunities and relationships that I have found since becoming a Network member. Being involved in the Network has led to increased participation at CHEST conferences through writing session proposals and moderating sessions. I have also been able to write for the CHEST Physician® publication and was invited to serve on a guidelines committee. Most importantly though, I have met some amazing people who are mentors and friends, and I have been fortunate to return the favor by mentoring junior members as well.
What are your hobbies?
Traveling, learning to golf (high handicap club!), reading (historical fiction, suspense/thriller, and police procedurals), and family adventures with my 3- and 4.5-year-old kids.
What is something you cannot live without (after family and friends)?
It's a toss-up between that first cup of coffee in the morning and a nice old world red wine on a Friday night.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with your Network peers?
Getting involved in CHEST is one of the best things I have ever done. Don't hesitate, just do it! Also, if you see me around, please stop me and say hi!
