GET TO KNOW YOUR LEADERSHIP
Q&A With Ryan Maves, MD, FCCP
Chest Infections and Disaster Response Network Vice-Chair
CHEST member since 2013
February 19, 2024
Where do you work?
Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
What are your research interests?
Severe viral infections, sepsis, and disaster medicine.
What led you to join your Network?
I trained as an infectious disease physician in the Navy, followed by a critical care fellowship. I have a longstanding interest in hospital and health system responses to public health emergencies, including pandemics and other disasters. The Chest Infections and Disaster Response Network could not be a better fit.
What achievements are you most proud of contributing to within your Network?
When I was Vice-Chair of the Disaster Response and Global Health Section, I had the honor of being selected by Steven Q. Simpson, MD, FCCP, to chair the CHEST COVID-19 Task Force from 2020 to 2022. During that time, our team produced numerous webinars, articles, infographics, and podcasts to help educate our colleagues about the rapid explosion of data to help understand, prevent, and treat disease during the darkest times of the pandemic.
How has being in a Network benefited your career and your experience as a CHEST member?
Being part of the Networks was really my introduction to CHEST as an organization and, more importantly, as a group of colleagues who I am happy to have as friends today. I've certainly been able to participate in a number of academic projects as a result of my Network membership. More importantly, though, I've made personal and professional connections, benefited from great mentorship, and hopefully passed that mentorship on to junior colleagues in the same way.
What are your hobbies?
Reading history, hiking, and science fiction.
What is something you cannot live without (after family and friends)?
I've said this before, but it's more what I can't live with. I probably have the shortest attention span of any infectious disease doctor ever, which means that I can't live with stasis. I constantly need a new project, a new thing to study or work on, or else I quickly get a little bored and irritable.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with your Network peers?
Just that it is a pleasure to work with everyone, and I look forward to doing more in the future!
