Screening for Potentially Life-Threatening Pathology on Non-Contrast Head CT for the Intensivist
This video was created by a member of the CHEST community.
This video covers the fundamentals of non-contrast head CT (NCHCT) in the evaluation of acute intracranial pathology for intensivists with no background in radiology, neurology, or neurosurgery. Viewers will be provided with a brief overview of relevant windowing and neuroanatomy in a normal head CT. We then delve into the broad categories of abnormal mass effect, hypodensities and hyperdensities on CT, and their differentials, before concluding with a screening algorithm for evaluating NCHCT.
Learning Objectives
- Recognize the importance of windowing to discern different tissues on NCHCT
- Distinguish the appearance of cytotoxic, vasogenic, and hydrostatic edema on NCHCT
- Classify the correct anatomical compartment and infer the likely etiology of acute blood on NCHCT
