Drew Harris, MD, FCCP

Editor in Chief, CHEST Advocates

Drew Harris, MD, FCCP, has a clinical focus in severe asthma and lung diseases related to coal mine dust. He is passionate about caring for disadvantaged and rural populations. Dr. Harris is medical director of the adult asthma program in the Pulmonary Division at the University of Virginia.

As medical director of the Black Lung Program at Stone Mountain Health Services in southwest Virginia, Dr. Harris travels to southwest Virginia each month to see patients and oversee a pulmonary function laboratory and pulmonary rehabilitation program. This is the only Black Lung Program in SW Virginia federally funded by the Health Resources & Services Administration.

Dr. Harris is co-principal investigator on a research study that brings 7 black lung clinics around the country together to better understand mental health in coal miners. Also in southwest Virginia, Dr. Harris works to support the clinical operations at the UVA Wise Student and Employee Clinic.

Dr. Harris works as a consulting pulmonologist for a Native American population on the Navajo and Hopi reservations through a partnership with Tuba City Regional Health in Northern Arizona.

As an associate program director in the UVA internal medicine residency program, he directs the Health Equity, Advocacy and Leadership (HEAL) track, as well as coordinates the community medicine program in partnership with community-based organizations, including the Charlottesville Free Clinic and The Haven. Dr. Harris teaches resident seminars on physician advocacy, rural health and a practical approach to the social drivers of health.
